This is my updated review (and bumped rating from a 4 to a 5): I really like the look of this boot and I liked the idea of the side zip to make getting them on and off quicker. In reality, though, the zipper doesn't open up the boot a whole lot so it's not exactly easy to get in and out using just the zipper but it is possible and that's mainly what I do. Originally I assumed with more wear they would get easier to get into and more comfortable. After several weeks, that is now proven to be true. They definitely need some time to break in; a few weeks seemed good for me. Initially, for probably less than a week, it was a little uncomfortable on my left ankle bone but that has now disappeared. I think it helps that I don't tighten the laces near the top all the way to give the boot a little more flexibility. I keep it fully laced, just not cranked down super tight. I'll probably even start to tighten them more since they're getting more comfortable with wear. They're not quite as comfortable as my Timberland Wodehouse Lost History boot but also not as pricey. For sizing, the boot definitely runs large. For some reason, Timberland calls a EU43 = US9 but most other sizing charts say EU43 is a US10 so I had to return the initial pair because they were a full size too big in US sizing. I've worn them a little in the rain with no problems but it wasn't very heavy so we'll see what happens in time.

Conclusion: I dig 'em and I would recommend them to a friend and tell them not to wear them on the same days that I do ;)

Bought 2 pair: one for myself and one for my son. Here's my opinion:

1. Boot itself seems fine. Good quality upper leather with substantial sole and heel.

2. Both pair ran large, not in length but in girth (around the top of foot), which makes them wear very clumsily, i.e., foot wallows around in the boot, even with insulated socks.

3. Bootstrap on top of boot is for looks only. Paper thin strap that pulled away from the seam (i.e., unseamly) on the first try. Only happened on one boot, but that's because stopped using the bootstrap after the first one failed. Have to have it sewn back on or cut it off. Haven't decided yet.

4. Zipper on the side is delicate/light and does not match the heft of the boot. I would expect to see this zipper on a purse, not a boot. Although it has endured so far, I am hesitant to test it beyond a soft pull.

5. Zipper on side of boot routinely binds on fabric backing when zipping up. A heavier zipper would have probably prevented this from happening.

I work in law enforcement and have been through the gamut of boots...danner, 511, rocky...and thought these looked good. Well the fit is true, and much better than the huge toe box of the 5.11's and very soft. The soles are even softer and more comfortable then the Danners I have had, which is impressive. The problem with these are the heels. The heel plate digs into the back of my heel something fierce. If I had to walk a lot (more than just a few traffic stops) in these my heels would be raw and bleeding.

Maybe a better winter boot since your socks will be thicker, but they are not insulated. Would send them back but I polished and shined them before wearing.
